What is beauty therapy?

Beauty therapy is treatments for the face and body that help people feel good – whether that involves enhancements to their physical appearance or techniques for relaxation. Beauty therapists are experts in this field, offering a range of non-medical services tailored to a client’s requirements. These can include massage, make-up, hair removal, facials, manicures, pedicures, and lash and brow treatments.

Some beauty therapists specialise in certain areas while others choose to work with variety of treatments. Beauty therapists can work in a range of environments including salons or spas, private mobile services, with cosmetic companies in a retail environment or self-employment.

To be successful in this field, beauty therapists need good personal hygiene and grooming, warm and welcoming personality, excellent time management skills, and a high degree of professionalism.

If you have relevant experience or international qualifications in the field, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL is an assessment process that considers an individual’s relevant prior learning – through life experience, work, or activities such as
volunteering, in Australia or overseas – to determine if they meet the requirements for a unit of study.

RTOs consider these existing skills and knowledge to assess whether a person demonstrates the required competencies needed to meet the relevant Australian standards. They can provide a credit against units of competency, allowing an individual to gain eligibility for formal qualification or reduce the amount of time required to achieve a formal qualification.
